Qualcomm has suedApple, alleging that it violated a software license contract to benefit rival chipmaker Intel Corp for making broadband modems, the latest salvo in the longstanding dispute between Qualcomm and Apple. According to Qualcomm, Apple representatives in July requested "highly confidential" information about how the units work with an unidentified wireless carrier's network. In September, a US judge said Apple lawsuits against Qualcomm overseas can proceed while the company's pricing dispute continues in the US, Reutersreported. Qualcomm has countered that Apple, one of its largest customers, has lied to regulators in an unfair attempt to bully it into charging less.
Qualcomm claim that Apple hasn't protected their software sufficiently, which they legally agreed to, and say Apple aren't allowing for a proper audit to review how the iPhone handles their software. Apple's decision about next year's products comes after the San Diego-based Qualcomm withheld software needed to test chips in prototypes, the Wall Street Journal reported.
In its 2017 fiscal results, Qualcomm revealed that its Q3 and Q4 2017 results were "negatively impacted as a result of actions taken by Apple and its contract manufacturers". Qualcomm reckons that Apple used this access to help Intel in its quest to compete in the LTE modem market.
Qualcomm has raised the stakes in its ongoing legal battle with Apple by filing a new lawsuit with potentially enormous ramifications.
In its USA case, Qualcomm alleges that it has six patents developed in the past four years that improve battery life in mobile devices and that 'Apple uses these technologies in its devices but is not paying for them'.
