  • UPDATE: Minor incident downtown Wednesday... - City of Las Vegas - Tumblr

Thankfully no-one was injured and the damage was light, however local news reports that the driver of the truck was cited with police confirming that the shuttle bus was not at fault in the incident.

The driverless electric shuttle in downtown Las Vegas, pictured on November 9, 2017, is back on the road one day after it was involved in an accident with a truck. The shuttle, made by the French company Navya ARMA, began a route looping it around Vegas's downtown.

Created to carry up to 15 people at a time, the shuttle has a max speed of 45km/h and has been created to be fully capable of driving on public roads.

Vegas's self-driving shuttle is operating in real-time traffic, a first for any city in the nation, and so it is being closely watched by many. The vehicle was reportedly involved in an accident during its first hour of operation. The shuttle did what it was supposed to do, in that it's sensors registered the truck and the shuttle stopped to avoid the accident.

In what appeared to be a response to that overflowing of anger, Twitter said it "paused all general verifications". The account's tweets must also be set to public.

Since first deploying the NAVYA ARMA in France in late 2015, the vehicles have transported more than 100,000 people and have grown to have a fleet of 30 ARMA's in use in seven countries around the world, including the United States, as of today. Self-driving vehicles aim to curb these human-related errors by automating the entire process, putting machines in control of what is now performed by humans.

While the shuttle remained out of service for the rest of the day, the tests are set to continue for the duration of the 12-month pilot in the downtown Innovation District, officials say.

The shuttle can be boarded at any of the three stops located on Fremont and Carson Streets between Las Vegas Boulevard and 8th Street.

AAA has partnered with Keolis, the city of Las Vegas and the Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada on the shuttle project, which offers free rides for up to 11 passengers as it travels a half-mile loop in the Fremont East neighborhood. A semi-truck backed into the autonomous shuttle reportedly grazing the fender.
