Target Fidget Spinners Need to Get the Lead Out, PIRG Says

  • Fidget spinners sold at Target contain lead, advocacy group says

U.S. PIRG Toxics Director Kara Cook-Shultz told CBS News that the Target website described the two spinner models for ages "6 and up" on the retailer's website, but the product page now reflects a "14 and older" description.

PIRG Education Fund is calling for the toys to be pulled from shelves and wants a recall issued.

"The toxic fidget spinners are still available both in toy aisles at Target stores and on its website", the organization said. They should also be watching out for any recall notices about the spinners.

Bulls-i-Toy, based in Iowa, supplies Target with the fidget spinners. The center circle of the "Fidget Wild Premium Spinner Metal" was tested for 1,300 ppm of lead and the arm tested for 520 ppm of lead. In a legal sense, lead regulations only refer to toys that are marketed for children 12 and under.

Federal laws limit the amount of lead in children's products to 100 parts per million (ppm).

However, the fidget spinners are sold near children's toys in stores.

Bucs' QB Winston Out At Least 2 Weeks With Shoulder Injury
Tampa is expected to activate Ryan Griffin from injured reserve this week and would carry three quarterbacks on the roster. Winston originally injured the shoulder last month, but aggravated the injury in a loss to the Saints on Sunday.

But, this particular fidget spinner, isn't technically a toy. Target, however, is pushing back on the report, as they say the legal limit for lead that PIRG cites is only applicable for children's toys. "All of our product are tested and comply with [Consumer Product Safety Commission] safety standards". Additionally, the packaging for the brass spinner says the toy is appropriate for ages "6 and up".

The Marion County Health Department offers free lead testing on all consumer products every Thursday from noon to 5:00 p.m.

Target did not immediately respond to request for comment.

"If a fidget spinner is marketed and is primarily intended for children 12 years of age and younger, companies must certify that their product meets toy safety and other standards, including limits for phthalates, lead content, and lead in paint, if applicable, and the U.S Toy Standard, ASTM F963-16", CPSC acting Chairman Ann Marie Buerkle said in an August 10, 2017 statement on fidget spinners.

CoPIRGreport that when Target and the toy's distributor, Bulls i Toy, were alerted to the findings, they refused to address the problem.
