The travel site has added a new warning message for businesses where sexual assault and other significant safety incidents have been reported.

Last week, the Journal Sentinel published its report on TripAdvisor's removal of reviews in which travelers claimed they had been raped and sexually assaulted at Iberostar Paraiso Maya, a resort located between Cancun and Playa del Carmen.

"We reserve the right for other properties and businesses to follow where we see credible reports of health, safety or discrimination issues", the spokesperson said. All of this "served as a wakeup call to TripAdvisor", travel analyst Henry H. Harteveldt, told The New York Times.

In an interview with Glamour, TripAdvisor shared why the new feature is important; "We'd been exploring the feasibility of a new badge notification system for a number of months".

The company has since vowed to clarify why certain reviews are rejected.

Kristie Love said was on vacation at an all-inclusive resort - the Iberostar Paraiso Maya - on the Mexican Riviera in 2010 when she says a hotel security guard dragged her into the bushes and raped her. When nothing came of her complaint, she posted a warning on TripAdvisor, but it was promptly deleted. "Several additional hotels in Mexico-including Iberostar Paraiso Lindo and Grand Vellas-were given a similar warning after reports indicated they had issues with "tainted alcohol and sexual assault".

The policy was changed a few years later to enable consumers to post about issues including sexual assault and rape, he said.

He also said the badges were meant to inform people, not punish the hotel. They have also used it to mark hotels which are suspected of posting fake reviews and to mark when major news events do not reflect the hotel in question.

Reviews are supposed to contain first-hand accounts only, so including a medical diagnosis or relaying a story from another person would lead to the post being taken down and a user receiving a generic rejection notice citing hearsay. Now, the website has incorporated changes in an effort to be more clear "about the reasons [a deleted] review doesn't meet guidelines and what part of it is in violation".

"Often it's a sentence that can be edited out and that review can be posted", Hoyt said.
