Turnbull announces plan to have MPs declare citizenship status after election

  • Mr Turnbull revealed Mr Frydenberg's mother was born in a Budapest ghetto in 1943 and fled

"I want to say that this is not an audit". He was born in 1951, just two years after Australian citizenship came into being in 1949, meaning his father, who emigrated in 1911 as a child, would have needed to renounce his own United Kingdom citizenship during that period.

The prime minister said this was a necessary and important step to address the "legitimate concern" that there is not enough transparency about politicians' citizenship status.

The announcement by Turnbull came after the government has been disrupted by a dual citizenship saga. "The obligation is on each member and each senator to make a full disclosure as I have repeatedly said in recent times".

Within 21 days of the parliament approving the measure, MPs will be required to provide to the registrar of members' interests a declaration that he or she was not, to the best of his or her knowledge and belief, a citizen of any country other than Australia.

"The problem of Australia is we have uncertainty over the constitutional eligibility of parliamentarians to make laws affecting all Australians", Shorten told reporters.

"I take it as a given that every member of the House and the Senate, as of today, believes that they are eligible to sit in the House or the Senate".

Labor leader Bill Shorten said he was prepared to "engage constructively" with the prime minister at a meeting on Wednesday.

The government plans to put the proposal, which has already been rejected by the minority Greens party, to both houses of parliament in Canberra later this month.

Young one of four Reds in England squad
With his unfortunate history of injuries, we want to make sure he's robust enough before we bring him in. 'He is a top player. But Southgate does not see it like that. "There is no question about his ability, his football brain or personality".

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said his Cabinet decided on Monday that all lawmakers should provide evidence to Parliament that they're not dual citizens.

The declaration will be made through the parliamentary register of members' and senators' interests.

"The question is: Are they still a citizen of that country?"

They must provide evidence of citizenship renunciation.

The declaration must state to the best of their knowledge they are not a citizen of another country.

Numerous politicians had argued that they had not been aware they were dual nationals due to their parents or place of birth.

"If a member, for example, were to make a statement here that was incorrect or false then they would be committing a very serious breach of privilege".
