Twitter says it's ending its iconic 140-character limit - and giving almost everyone 280 characters.

The Twitter account for popular crime drama Law And Order: SVU used their first 280 character tweet the only way they really could. This was a massive shake-up in the Twitter-verse, as users have always been subjected to work within the confining 140 character limit.

Twitter has officially increased its character limit from 140 to 280.

During the test, Twitter found that users who tweeted more received more likes, retweets and mentions.

But how would 280 characters have impacted some of the most iconic tweets that this godforsaken website has ever produced?

Twitter says it expects a bump in larger tweets as the novelty of 280 characters hits home, but that it should level off again very quickly as it becomes the new normal.

Ground invasion 'only way' to stop North Korea
The U.S. administration says it seeks a diplomatic solution to the nuclear standoff but "all options" are on the table. It was not pleasant for them, was it?' said Trump, who wore a leather bomber jacket as he addressed the troops.

Twitter was already testing the change with some users over the last couple of months. In most cases, it doesn't seem like most people are actually increasing the length of their tweets; we have apparently been trained well. By removing that hurdle, Twitter is hoping people will tweet more, drawing more users in.

Only 1% of test users' tweets in English ran into the character limit, compared to 9% previously.

The 140-character limit certainly made it hard for businesses to share in-depth messages.

Just 5 percent of tweets posted during the trial period were longer than 140 characters - and only 2 percent were longer than 190 characters.

While Twitter notes that while the change is taking place for most parts of the world, there are still a few that will be sticking with the 140-character limit.
