  • The Senate could begin debating changes to the Marriage Act as early as this week if the'Yes vote comes out on top

Despite some early criticisms that the use of the postal system would make the survey inaccessible, an overwhelming 79.5 per cent of Australian voters did participate, in what the Chief Statistician called an "outstanding" turnout.

The non-binding result paves the way for Australian Prime Minister Malcom Turnbull to bring in legislation allowing same-sex marriage.

The result is expected to mirror a myriad of opinion polls pointing to a win for the "yes" campaign, possibly as high as 60 per cent.

Parliamentary opponents of same-sex marriage such as Matt Canavan and Cory Bernardi are standing firm.

The result will be revealed at 10am AEDT, live from the Australian Bureau of Statistics in Canberra.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has declared a Yes vote in the same-sex marriage survey will have people see "Parliament at its best" as he seeks to play down divisions among his MPs over new religious protections.

Australia has said yes to same-sex marriage.

Liberal senator Dean Smith has written the bill that has been largely supported across both sides of the house by senators on the yes side.

Should the vote go that way, Smith is prepared to introduce his marriage equality bill immediately.

It will be supported by Labor and the Greens even though the minor party plans to present amendments. But he may have to compete with another bill from conservative Liberal Senator James Paterson that contains provisions such as allowing "conscientious objections" for people who don't wish to cater for gay weddings due to their religious beliefs.

"I'm sure you will all applaud the authenticity and the passion that will come into the different views", Mr Turnbull said. The outcome will boost marriage equality campaigners in Northern Ireland and elsewhere.

"It think it indicates what modern Australia is", he told Sky News. Ironically to ensure these protections, the bill would override existing state and territory anti-discrimination and freedom-of-speech laws.

Wong said the bill that everyone should be discussing is the Smith bill which has cross-party support and is due to be debated in the senate on Thursday should there be a yes result.

We're less than an hour out from learning the result of the same-sex marriage survey and campaign events are getting under way.
