12 injured as terrorists open fire near Peshawar University

Police and military troops killed three attackers during a firefight and while clearing the complex in Peshawar, the capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, they said. The operation is ongoing. Five people were wounded and were taken to hospital.

An eyewitness said, "We were sleeping when we heard gunshots".

A spokeswomen for two hospitals in the city said they had received a total of nine bodies and were treating some 38 injured, including several in critical condition.

The Dawn quoted police officials, as saying that the terrorists aimed to attack the university hostel. He said the operation had been completed and the building was being cleared by security officials.

At least 13 people were injured during the gun battle between the terrorists and security forces, including eight students, three army soldiers, one policeman and one security guard.

Tehrik-e Taliban Pakistan (TTP) - claimed responsibility for the attack.

The area where the incident occurred is a hub for educational institutions including the University of Peshawar.

Salahuddin Mehsud, Inspector General of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, said timely action by police and the Army helped in reducing the number of deaths.

Security was also tight after weeks-long anti-blasphemy protests in Islamabad that saw seven killed and hundreds wounded in clashes with police.

The Pakistani Taliban have claimed a series of high-profile attacks in the country in recent years, the deadliest being the Peshawar school massacre that left 151 people dead, including 134 children.

Violence erupted over the weekend after police and paramilitary forces launched a bungled attempt to clear a sit-in, igniting fresh demonstrations in cities across the country, including in Lahore and Karachi.
