Virtually all functions other than making phone calls may slow down as the device ages, reported CBS News' Anna Werner.

For years, iPhone users have wondered why their phone seems to go slow, compared to the newer models.

"While this state is created to mask a deficiency in battery power, users may believe that the slow down is due to CPU (central processing unit) performance, instead of battery performance, which is triggering an Apple introduced CPU slowdown".

On Wednesday, the theory that Apple slows down older iPhones to get people to upgrade cropped up again after a post on Reddit and some battery testing done by Primate Labs' John Poole put the issue into the spotlight.

"Our goal is to deliver the best experience for customers, which includes overall performance and prolonging the life of their devices", said an Apple spokeswoman. The shutdown protection's now been extended to the iPhone 7 range too.

Currently, affected models are iPhone 7, iPhone 6, iPhone 6s and iPhone SE, with other models potentially receiving the same feature in the future. The devices said to be affected were the iPhone 6, the iPhone 6s, and the iPhone SE.

Apple's admission to slowing down older iPhones isn't sitting well with one California man.so he's going after the tech giant on behalf of all his fellow outdated iPhone users.

"Our benchmarking data shows that, rather than intentionally degrading the performance of older models, Apple actually does a good job of supporting its older devices with regular updates that maintain a consistent level of performance across iOS versions".

They were reacting to Apple's statement on Wednesday - in response to a claim by an app company earlier this week - that it had introduced a software feature past year to prevent phones from unexpectedly shutting down.

He suggests Apple offer rebates or make it easy for consumers to buy new batteries.

If you've ever felt that you iPhone is getting slower in its old age, you're not insane.

Apple is fortunate to be the software maker and hardware maker here, will be interesting to see what tests are conducted on other phones. However, Stefan Bogdanovich argues in his lawsuit that this practice isn't disclosed to iPhone customers when they sign their contracts with Apple. Whether rooted in iOS updates or degradation of the internal hardware components, several iPhone users have had enough and, according to TMZ, are taking legal action as a result.
