STANFORD MEDICINE researchers are working with Apple on a research study to determine whether the Apple Watch's heart-rate sensor can identify irregular heart rhythms associated with a condition known as atrial fibrillation. "These stories inspire us and we're determined to do more to help people understand their health". "But the challenge is, many people with AFib don't feel symptoms, so it often goes undiagnosed". The study is open to anyone who wishes to participate - as long as they are at least 22 years of age and they own an Apple Watch Series 1 (not 1st generation) or above. Using software algorithms, the Apple Watch can isolate heart rhythms from other noise, and identify an irregular heart rhythm. "So we're expanding that work and today we're announcing the Apple Heart Study".

The first Apple Heart Study was launched today in the U.S., and every Apple Watch owner over the age of 22 can - and should - enroll as soon as possible. Participants will also get a free consultation with a study doctor and an ECG patch for additional monitoring. American Well is providing the telemedicine services.

Loyld Minor, dean the Stanford University School of Medicine, said the Apple Heart Study will help medical researchers "explore how technology like Apple Watch's heart rate sensor can help usher in a new era of proactive healthcare central to our precision health approach".

This study takes all of that a step further: Now Apple itself will be running a study and submitting data to the Food and Drug Administration.

EKG-Reading Kardia Band Is First Apple Watch Accessory To Get FDA Clearance

ResearchKit has enabled 12 research study apps, including a Concussion Tracking app from NYU Langone, a mole-mapping app that detects melanoma from Oregon Health and Science University, and an app promoting sleep health from the University of California San Diego, all of which are free on the app store. In September Williams said that Apple worked closely with the FDA in developing the study.

The Apple Heart Study collects stats from volunteer participants when you are wearing the Apple Watch.

Available for iPhone and Apple Watch users in the USA the Apple Heart Study app represents part of a "first-of-its-kind" research project that seeks to establish the potential use of wearables such as Apple Watch in detecting atrial fibrillation (AFib) - a condition associated with an increased risk of strokes and heart failure.

AliveCor CEO Vic Gundotra told MobiHealthNews he doesn't see Apple - who he praised as a helpful partner in bringing his device to market - as competition.
