  • Austria legalizes same-sex marriage

Austria's Constitutional Court nullified a previous ruling that prevented same-sex couples from getting married, meaning that by January 1st, 2019 at the absolute latest, LGBTQI couples will be allowed to legally marry in the traditionally conservative country.

Legal restraints will be lifted in the European country, with the old regulation scheduled to end on 31 December, 2018.

The court said in a statement Tuesday, Dec. 5 that it would remove the words "two people of different sex" from its marriage law.

In Europe continue to legalize same-sex relationships.

Same-sex couples in Austria have been allowed to enter legal partnerships since 2010, but until now have not been able to marry.

Austria's decision brings Europe one step closer to marriage equality acceptance, joining other nations like Spain, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom, that have already passed similar legislations. "We are very happy", said HOSI chairman Christian Hoegl.

"The resulting discriminatory effect is seen in the fact that through the different title of the family status people living in same-sex partnerships have to disclose their sexual orientation even in situations, in which it is not and must not be relevant and. are highly likely to be discriminated", it added.

Austria is the sixteenth European country to legalize gay marriage, according to TheNYT. "We want to use the opportunity for a renewed call for a fundamental reform of marriage".

The limitations in question were that the previous definition of marriage allowed it only to be between "different sex" partners.

Twenty-four countries already have marriage equality.

Austria's neighbour Germany voted to legalise same-sex marriage earlier in the year, despite chancellor Angela Merkel voting against it.
