Google announced its ad-blocking plans in June, and has been working with other websites and ad agencies to come up with best practices.

Chrome's ad-blocker doesn't appear to be launching with a new version of the web browser, so it's likely a server-side feature that Google will be able to turn on for all users over the course of a few days. In addition, FireFox browser also comes with extension to effectively block unwanted popups, popunders and overlay ads.

In January 2018, the Coalition will begin rollout of the Better Ads Experience Program, a voluntary initiative for industry participants to improve the online ad experience for consumers and promote marketplace adoption of the Better Ad Standards.

Google joined the Coalition for Better Ads, a group that publishes quality standards for display ads on the web, in 2017. A handful of publishers rely on annoying and disruptive ads which is why people tend to use ad blockers. As long as you use Chrome, Google will make sure you see fewer and fewer obnoxious ads, which will hopefully mean less reliance on an ad blocker to help support the content providers you read the most. For mobile environments, the Coalition has identified pop-up ads, prestitial ads, ads with density greater than 30 percent, flashing animated ads, auto-play video ads with sound, poststitial ads with countdowns, full-screen scrollover ads and large sticky ads as being non-acceptable.

The native ad blocker that Google has built into its Chrome browser will get to work starting February 15, 2018, the search giant confirmed today.

Sites that are in violation of these guidelines can be reported to Google's Ad Experience Report.
