De Gea 'best in world' as United beat Arsenal 3-1

"I think we produced excellent quality and were not decisive enough, neither in our box nor in their box".

Man United's mercurial talisman Paul Pogba may have strayed into that risky territory this weekend when speaking to BBC Football Focus about City's players.

Jose Mourinho hailed David De Gea as the best goalkeeper in the world after the Spain international's heroics helped Manchester United to a 3-1 win at Arsenal.

There was controversy to be found, of course, with Arsenal having a pretty reasonable penalty shout denied in the game's later stages but perhaps the biggest scandal on the night was the sending off of United's Paul Pogba, who - as a result of his misdemeanour - will miss out on his side's crucial derby matchup with Manchester City next time around. In my case, it's different because I want to win.

City are five points ahead of United, but can extend that lead to eight if they beat lowly West Ham on Sunday.

"What I saw today was the best goalkeeper in the world", said Mourinho, who said he "did not know" what to make of Pogba's dismissal and would leave it to the television pundits to decide.

"We are second and are chasing the top of the table".

United were certainly indebted to their goalkeeper at the Emirates, and Mourinho was effusive in his praise after the game. Arsenal played in some period unbelievable attacking football - creating difficulties for us.

8 dead as rain batters Tamil Nadu and Kerala

"He made fantastic saves", Mourinho said.

The scoreline flattered United with Arsenal playing with verve and pummeling De Gea's goal.

That said, Wenger was amazed they did not make more of the chances they created, especially once Paul Pogba was given a straight red card with 15 minutes remaining.

Even so, Wenger acknowledged Arsenal had only themselves to blame for a loss that effectively ended their title bid.

Alexandre Lacazette replied early in the second half but Lingard struck again on the break just past the hour as Arsenal suffered their first home defeat in the league since January.

There was much to admire in Arsenal's attacking play but they never fully recovered after defensive sloppiness allowed Antonio Valencia and Jesse Lingard to put a livewire United side 2-0 up after 11 minutes.

"But I'm angry and disappointed because we had nothing to show for it".
