Fifty-Eight House Democrats Vote to Proceed with Impeachment
07 December, 2017, 02:45 | Author: Irene Delgado
Last month, a group of six Democrats, including Green, unveiled articles of impeachment accusing Trump of obstructing justice when firing former FBI Director James Comey; violating the Constitution's emoluments clause; and undermining the independence of the federal judiciary and freedom of the press.
A longshot bid to impeach President Trump failed on Wednesday.
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) implored Green and others in the party to shelve the idea.
Rep. Al Green (D-Tex.) brought articles of impeachment, arguing that Trump has "brought disrepute, contempt, ridicule and disgrace on the presidency" and "sown discord among the people of the United States".
The measure was voted down 364-58 as every Republican and a majority of Democrats opted to table the measure.
Forcing a vote on impeachment before investigators complete their work, Democratic leaders say, may undermine the potential for a bipartisan effort over impeachment if inquiries uncovered compelling evidence against Trump.
"Democrats are firmly focused on taking real, effective steps to improve the lives of hard-working Americans and defeating Republicans' cruel barrage of attacks on the middle class", Pelosi and Hoyer said in a joint statement.
Green's articles of impeachment do not allege Trump has specifically committed a crime.
The most likely result, however, is that House Speaker Paul Ryan will bring up a vote on a "motion to table" Green's impeachment resolution Wednesday - essentially killing it.
The resolution offered by Green states that Trump has sown discord among the people of the USA based on national origin and race.
Several Dems contend that it's premature to bring articles of impeachment before special counsel Robert Mueller completes his investigation into the Kremlin's election meddling. The resolution cites the comments made after the white nationalist marches in Charlottesville, Virginia, in August, after which Trump said the marchers on both sides were "very fine people".
We are a long way from having the votes in Congress to impeach, a vote that must happen on a bipartisan basis.
