The facility which is being tested in the city of Jamestown is all set to launch officially soon and will be paired to the nearby Neoen Hornsdale Wind Farm for added stability.

Tesla, the U.S. technology giant, has started up the world's largest battery and plugged it into South Australia's power grid.

"Today's launch follows a successful period of regulatory testing that ensured the battery's ability to both act as a generator and charge to and from the National Energy Market", South Australia said on December 1.

"Neoen is pleased to be able to reinforce its Australian footprint through the achievement of the Hornsdale Wind Farm & Battery and is extremely proud to contribute further to the development of renewable energy in Australia".

The world's biggest lithium ion battery, built by Tesla, was switched on on Friday in South Australia, ahead of the State Government's deadline of the beginning of the summer, and well ahead of Tesla CEO Elon Musk's self-imposed deadline of "100 days or it's free". However, supporters of the new solution say that it will help stabilize the state's power grid that derives more than 40 percent of its electricity from wind energy, but needs helps when the wind dies down, especially during summers. The plan comes after the state-wide blackout in September past year.

South Australia, which relies heavily on solar and wind-generated energy, has been scrambling to find a way to bolster its fragile power grid since the entire state suffered a blackout during a storm previous year.

"This means that, for the first time, clean and affordable wind energy can be dispatched to the grid 24 hours a day, seven days a week, whether the wind is blowing or not, improving system reliability", a statement from South Australia Premier Jay Weatherill's office stated.

"Storage can respond within a fraction of a second". The Elon Musk-led firm built the Powerpack system, which can provide electricity for over 30,000 homes, to ease South Australia's energy woes after it was hit with atotal blackout in 2016 following an "unprecedented" storm.
