Two rockets were fired from the Gaza Strip Thursday afternoon, according to another IDF statement. There were no casualties.

The rockets, which triggered the Code Red alert system in Ashkelon and other Israeli communities, landed in Gaza, the Israel Defense Forces spokesman said.

Israel holds Hamas responsible for all activity happening in the Gaza Strip.

In the hours afterward, the Tawhid al-Jihad group claimed responsibility for the attack on social media. Security sources said no rockets fell in Israeli territory.

It is worth mentioning that the Ministry of Health in the Gaza Strip said that Israeli soldiers shot and injured nine Palestinians, protesting near the border fence in the coastal region.

A lengthy list of USA allies, regional powers and Palestinian politicians warned Trump against recognizing Jerusalem as Israel's capital in the lead-up to his announcement on Wednesday, saying that it would inflame tensions and provoke violence.

Israel has occupied East Jerusalem since the 1967 Middle East war.

The announcement was a major shift by Washington that overturns decades of USA foreign policy.

Jerusalem's status is among the most hard issues in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and the U.S. traditional position has been that it must be negotiated between the two sides.

Palestinian leaders had previously warned the move would threaten a two-state solution.
