Instagram Working on 'Direct' Spin-off App For Messaging

From there, you can easily switch between your Posts Archive and your new Stories Archive.

Instagram is now testing Direct, a standalone messaging app for Instagram's private chat features. But, what is the new Instagram Direct? Think Facebook Messenger mixed with Snapchat, which honestly might be the best idea ever. There is no official timeline for releasing the app globally.

The new standalone app is reportedly just a test, for now, and will start rolling out today for iOS and Android users in six test countries: Chile, Israel, Italy, Portugal, Turkey, and Uruguay.

The app is now available in six countries, no word on whether it will be released globally but if all goes well most likely soon. As it stands, only a few markets have this new app Direct rolled out while Instagram continues to experiment. Users who download Direct will see their Instagram inbox disappear, but it comes back when the messaging-only app is deleted. Also important to note that installing Direct will remove the inbox feature from your Instagram.

Swiping left from this page will take you to the Account and Settings page.

Internal rifts have shaken the fragile alliance between the Houthis and Saleh loyalists, who joined ranks in 2014 to seize Sanaa. The following day the Houthis began to dramatically reverse the Saleh loyalists' gains, however.

The reason for the split is the notion that private messaging does not fit comfortably within an app which is designed for broadcasting images and messages publicly. "We can push the boundaries to create the fastest and most creative space for private sharing when Direct is a camera-first, standalone app".

Personally, I don't mind Direct much.

The first thing you'll notice in the app is the camera UI. While photos are encouraged, you're not limited to using them. A swipe down in this pane will reveal a text field with a gradient background in case you just wanna type something up for someone.

To date, Instagram Stories has been Facebook's most successful effort to replicate Snap's (NYSE:SNAP) Snapchat and its Stories feature.

Instagram also added "face filters" over the summer. On the Direct app, you can swipe right to transition to Instagram.
