Michael Flynn Vowed to End Russia Sanctions, According to Whistleblower

07 December, 2017, 02:29 | Author: Irene Delgado

Michael Flynn, President Donald Trump's former national security adviser, promised to swiftly end USA sanctions against Russian Federation as one of the "first orders of business" for the incoming Trump administration, according to a whistleblower's account detailed in a new letter from Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.), the top Democrat on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee.

The account is from a whistleblower made public for the first time today.

These statements from Flynn to Alex Copson, managing partner of ACU Strategic Partners, reveal Flynn's attempt to "manipulate the course of global nuclear policy for the financial gain of his former business partners", Democratic representative Elijah Cummings wrote in a letter Wednesday.

The whistle-blower contacted Cummings' office in June, and gave the congressman permission to share his account as part of the committee's investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election. The account provides the strongest claim yet that the administration was focused on unraveling the sanctions that President Barack Obama had just put in place and that Flynn had a personal motivation for doing so.

Cummings also said the whistleblower quoted a business associate of Flynn as saying the economic sanctions against Russian Federation imposed by former President Barack Obama would be "ripped up" as Flynn's first order of business as Trump's national security adviser.

As the president spoke, Flynn reportedly texted Copson that the nuclear project was "good to go", the witness said Copson told him.

Perhaps most intriguingly of all, Cummingswrites that he told Special Counsel Robert Mueller's team about all this some time ago - and that they asked him to delay publicly revealing this information "until they completed certain investigation steps".

Copson is the managing partner of ACU, a company that had funded a 2015 trip Flynn took the Middle East that he failed to disclose on security clearance forms.

The company did not respond to a request for comment Wednesday.

According to the whistleblower, Copson said, "Mike has been putting everything in place for us".

The whistleblower, who provided his account to Cummings in June, said he was with Alex Copson, managing partner of ACU Strategic Partners, a key Flynn ally on the nuclear project, on January 20, Inauguration Day.

Cummings said that the whistleblower's allegations raise concerns that Flynn improperly aided the nuclear project after joining the White House as one of Trump's top security officials.

Cummings said he had found the unnamed informant to be "authentic, credible and reliable", and offered to produce the person for Gowdy.

Media captionAfter Flynn's guilty plea, what next for the Russian Federation investigation? "They have now informed us that they have done so".

Attorneys for Flynn and Copson did not immediately return email and phone requests for comment. Once Flynn started at the White House, federal regulations prohibited him from working on any matter he served as a "consultant" on during the previous year, according to the Office of Government Ethics.

Cummings did not identify the witness, whom he described as a whistleblower.
