MPs say hard border with Republic of Ireland appears 'inevitable' after Brexit

  • Britain’s Prime Minister Theresa May attends a bilateral meeting during the Eastern Partnership summit at the European Council Headquarters in Brussels

Both the Irish Government and the European Union have consistently warned that Brexit negotiations can not move on to the next phase until "sufficient progress" is made on the border issue.

London's proposal would allow "Regulatory Convergence" or the adoption of European Union industry standards by Northern Ireland to continue in an attempt to minimize the disruption of trade between it and the Republic of Ireland.

Theresa May's plan for a "light-touch" border using technology is "untested and to some extent speculative", its report added.

The issue is a major sticking point in the negotiations and must be dealt with before trade talks can begin.

Clearly, Ireland wants the post-Brexit arrangement to be as close the the status quo as possible, with no border infrastructure in particular.

U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May can't muster a majority in Parliament without DUP votes.

The EU will decide in mid-December whether there has been sufficient progress in Brexit negotiations to consider moving the talks to a further stage where future relations between the United Kingdom and the bloc are discussed.

"On the question of the border, as I've said many times, the best and most obvious solution would be for the U.K.to remain in the Customs Union and Single Market", Varadkar said.

"If there is any hint that in order to placate Dublin and the European Union they're prepared to have Northern Ireland treated differently to the rest of the United Kingdom, then they can't rely on our vote", DUP member of parliament Sammy Wilson said in an interview with the BBC.

Expressing full support to Varadkar, Tusk said: "The key to the U.K.'s future lies in Dublin", and the other member states would back whatever Ireland decides.

Saying Northern Ireland could not fall under any customs regime separate from that governing the rest of the United Kingdom, the MP's position is directly at odds with the Government's reported proposal.
