At least 18 rockets have been fired at Israel since US President Trump's highly-contested decision to declare Jerusalem as the capital of the country.

According to Aljezera, there were no immediate reports of casualties.

Israel intercepted rockets fired from the Gaza Strip on Friday, the military said, in what appeared to be an attack that targeted a memorial ceremony for a slain Israeli soldier.

The Israeli army claimed it was responding to shells, fired from Gaza into Sha'ar Hangev Regional Council of Settlements, and added that one shell hit a structure, and two others were intercepted by the Iron Dome system.

Locals said that Israeli naval ships chased down fishing boats off the coast of northern Gaza and opened fire at them.

The status of the city is one of the most sensitive issues in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. "We will use all means to defend Israel's sovereignty and security", Netanyahu said. A third landed in a community bordering Gaza.

Although Israel said it attacked Hamas posts, the source of the rockets remains unknown. Twelve Palestinians have died in the violence so far.

It said troops used riot dispersal means in protests across the West Bank where Palestinians threw fire bombs and stones at soldiers.
