Ole Miss supposed to get NCAA ruling on infractions Friday

  • Reports: NCAA smacks Ole Miss with additional postseason ban, more scholarship cuts

The NCAA's conclusion is essentially that Ole Miss assistant coaches and boosters were running wild and committing recruiting violations left and right.

The seemingly never-ending investigation by the NCAA into Ole Miss athletics is finally over - and the football program took the brunt of the penalties.

Bjork confirmed that rising seniors with the Rebels' football program can transfer to another university due to next season's bowl ban, but he said he was not aware of any players who plan to leave.

The NCAA docked Ole Miss an additional 13 scholarships, which will be added to the 11 scholarship cuts the school had previously self-imposed on itself.

Vitter announced earlier today that Ole Miss will "vigorously appeal" the 2018 postseason ban, which the NCAA levied in addition to the university's self-imposed ban for 2017.

Ole Miss officials have been notified that they will receive their long-awaited ruling from the NCAA committee on infractions Friday morning, a source familiar with the situation confirmed to ESPN. A dozen boosters and six former staffers were implicated by the NCAA in arranging impermissible benefits, including cash payments, free vehicle rides to campus, free hotel rooms, food, and Rebels apparel from an Oxford-area sports merchandise store.

The COI expressly agreed that I "promoted an atmosphere of compliance and expected my staff to abide by the rules".

The Rebels will also be on probation for three more years through November 30, 2020 and must pay a financial penalty of about $179,000.

Former head coach Hugh Freeze also received a suspension and show cause for failure to monitor his staff. Two staffers also arranged for fraudulent standardized test scores for three recruits.

Now that Ole Miss has a better idea of its punishment, it can begin the process of rebuilding the program. Matt Luke was named the permanent head coach on Sunday after serving on an interim basis throughout the 2017 season. The 41-year-old led the Rebels to a respectable season, including an Egg Bowl win over rival Mississippi State last week. Freeze also resigned from the school when it was discovered he made several phone calls to an escort service on his university-issued cell phone. The school said the resignation was not in relation to the NCAA case.
