Erica Garner, who became a well-known activist after her father, Eric Garner, died in police custody, has died at the age of 27. "No one gave her justice", she wrote. Family members were being called to Woodhull Hospital early Thursday morning to say their final goodbyes to the young activist.

Following her father's death, Garner led marches in NY and elsewhere, drawing attention to the plight of African-Americans who've been victims of police brutality.

She had been hospitalized in Brooklyn, New York, after she reportedly went into cardiac arrest nearly a week ago.

Garner was placed into a medically induced coma on December 23 after suffering a heart attack brought on by asthma. "She left on her own terms".

"She was a warrior, she was a fighter and we didn't pull the plug on her", Esaw Snipes, Erica Garner's mother, said to the New York Daily News.

Eric Garner died after a police officer subdued him with a chokehold in 2014. However, a day after her family was still holding on to hope that she could recover.

Garner gave birth to her second child in August, naming him after her late father.

A Staten Island grand jury declined to indict Pantaleo in 2014; the officer remains on modified duty. It was during the pregnancy that she was diagnosed with an enlarged heart and suffered her first heart attack shortly after the delivery. The video of the encounter traveled around the world as Garner's last words - "I can't breathe" - became a rallying cry for advocates of policing reform, as stories and videos about the deaths of black men killed by the police continue to draw wide outrage.

Rest in peace Erica Garner and thank you for your service.
