  • Synaptics in-screen fingerprint scanner to debut in Vivo

The "Clear ID" technology from Synaptics will enable phone manufacturers to do away with the current generation of scanners for fingerprint-based biometric security.

Of the technology, Patric Moorhead, in his post says, "This sensor is actually a CMOS image sensor, less than 0.7 mm thick, similar to what a camera uses".

Earlier this week, Synaptics - the company responsible for handling the touch input on millions of laptop trackpads and smartphone screens - announced that it has started mass production with its first optical in-display fingerprint sensors.

Vivo is indeed a "top five" smartphone OEM, at least, according to IDC, the company comes after Samsung, Apple, Huawei, Oppo, and Xiaomi, in terms of shipment results in the third quarter of 2017. The technology that Synaptics has come out with, aka Clear ID, is said to be fast and simple.

Conor McGregor Says He Wants a UFC Fight Next
He fought the returning Mayweather at the junior middleweight limit of 154-pounds and they used 8-ounce gloves. As the fight played out, McGregor began to fade until he was eventually stopped in the tenth round.

Synaptics claims its Clear ID performs twice as fast as 3D facial recognition technology like Apple's Face ID, and doesn't depend on outdoor lighting condition to work well. The in-display sensors work with wet, dry, and cold fingers, and can unlock devices including while it's sitting on the table, at any angle, or while in a auto mount.

Embedding fingerprint sensors in displays has proven tricky and was why the Apple iPhone X lacked Touch ID in its OLED display. It's also fully scratch- and waterproof - since it will be protected by the smartphone's glass display. "Synaptics' Clear ID fingerprint sensors are faster, more convenient, and more secure than alternative biometrics, and this optical technology represents a major innovation shift and opportunity for the smartphone market". "It is big for Synaptics, but even bigger for the smartphone industry and consumers". Now, we know the name of the first phone manufacturer that plans to include the tech in a smartphone: Vivo. Meanwhile, reports also suggest that Synaptics will demo Clear ID at CES 2018.

Synaptics is planning a demonstration for January 2018 on a full-production, soon to be announced "tier one" customer phone.
