  • Reports: Syrian Army Intercepts Missiles Near Damascus

Several Israeli ground-to-surface missiles have been intercepted by Syrian forces, while a number of others caused material damage in the area south of Damascus, the Syrian Al-Ikhbariya TV channel reported.

Israeli missiles struck a military base near Damascus early Saturday morning, Syrian state television said.

A Lebanese report said that 12 Iranians were killed in the attack.

The Israeli air force has said it struck arms convoys of the Syrian military and Lebanon's Hezbollah almost 100 times during more than six years of the Syrian war. In it, he addresses Iran's attempts to entrench itself in Syria and says Israel will not allow it.

"At half past midnight (local time, Saturday), the Israeli enemy fired several surface-to-surface missiles at a military position in Damascus province", SANA news agency reported. According to the reports, the damage to the base was heavy.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has previously warned that Israel would in no way allow Iran to establish any military presence in Syria. Israel has not confirmed that attack either.

Tehran has helped prop up the Syrian regime with militias and officers. Israel also shot down a reconnaissance drone it believed was operated by Syria.

The BBC reported last month that Iran was building a permanent military base near the town. The report was based on intelligence from "Western security sources", the report said. The British broadcaster commissioned a series of satellite pictures that showed widespread construction at the site.
