Two Men Arrested in Killings of Lesbian Couple, 2 Children

TROY- Two Schenectady men were charged Saturday morning for a quadruple murder in Troy, New York.

A property manager found 36-year-old Shanta Myers and 22-year-old Brandi Mells ( who were in a relationship ), along with Myers' children, 11-year-old Jeremiah and 5-year-old Shanise, on December 26.

The duo appeared in Troy City Court and were both arraigned on one count of first-degree murder and four counts of second-degree murder.

At the scene, police recovered a knife with blood on both the handle and the blade located on a ledge near a closet close to the victims.

Myers's oldest child, 15-year-old Isaiah, was away from home at the time of the murders.

A local Albany newspaper reported, John Tedesco, Troy Police Chief said one of the defendants knew one of the victims.

Tedesco told Fox News that "certain factors were uncovered during the investigation" that may mean the killings were targeted. Mells, Shanta's partner, took in the family after they lost a previous apartment. Her 5-year-old daughter loved cooking, too, so the family agreed to let her cook spaghetti as part of their Christmas meal.

CBS affiliate WRGB reports that the Troy Boys & Girls Club set up a GoFundMe to help the family with burial and funeral costs. "We are shocked and deeply saddened by this tragedy".

"Troy is a strong, resilient city that always comes together to support our neighbors & friends impacted by tragic incidents like this", Madden wrote on Twitter.

"Our hearts are broken and our thoughts and deepest condolences are with their family and loved ones during this terribly troubling time", Carmello wrote.
