UAE Denies Entry to Female Tunisians

The agency quoted the Emirati diplomat as saying that the measures were "temporary and relating to security arrangements" and that the ban had been lifted.

A number of Tunisian women said in recent days that their travel to the Gulf state on UAE airlines had been delayed and some had to undergo additional examination of their visas.

The transport ministry said in a statement on its Facebook page that it "has made a decision to suspend flights of Emirates Airlines to and from Tunisia until the company can find a suitable solution to operate its flights in accordance with worldwide laws and treaties". They called on the Tunisian authorities to take diplomatic measures to reverse the UAE decision, which they described as "thoughtless" and against all diplomatic norms and procedures of worldwide transport.

The condemnations came hours after a female Tunisian writer, Maha Jouini, was prevented from traveling on a UAE plane from Beirut to Beijing, China. "In the UAE, we are proud of our experience in empowering women; we appreciate Tunisian women, respect them and value their pioneering experience", Gargash said in a tweet, according to a Khaleej Times report.

"The UAE authorities had security information regarding terrorist operations to be carried out by Tunisian women or women carrying Tunisian citizenship".

The barring of Tunisian women has caused anger among rights groups and political parties in Tunisia.

Emirates advised affected passengers to contact their travel agent or booking office for assistance rebooking flights following the ban on December 25.
