  • Vince McMahon's Entertainment Company Files for Several XFL Trademarks

The XFL lasted one season.

WWE don Vince McMahon has flogged £75million's worth of stock in the wrestling company to help relaunch the XFL - a violent spin-off of American football - according to reports.

Sports Business Reporter Darren Rovell, also reported that Alpha Entertainment filed for five trademarks to "XFL" on December 16, with it showing up in the trademark office filing this week.

The XFL reports seem to fit because it allows Vince to take another stab at building a professional football organization and doesn't put the long-lasting WWE brand at risk.

The trademarks, which were "abandoned" between 2002 and 2005, also cover merchandise related to a potential league. Speculation now turns to whether this is the right time for the XFL to return and if McMahon is about to lose even more money this time around.

"World Wrestling Entertainment filed details with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission that McMahon, chairman and CEO, sold 3.34 million shares of the company, which equaled about $100 million".

The filing for the sale noted that the shares were being sold, "primarily to fund a separate entity from the Company, Alpha Entertainment LLC, which Mr. McMahon established to explore investment opportunities across the sports and entertainment landscapes, including professional football".

The XFL, which was a joint venture between WWE and NBC, was supposed to be a direct competitor to the NFL.

The league could have a political bent, as former reality TV show host and United States president Donald Trump - a friend of McMahon - has recently criticised the NFL.

Anyone who grew up with the WWE (or WWF back in the day) will remember the company's eccentric owner Vince McMahon.
