  • Tiger Woods finishes Day 2 tied fifth

Though Woods' torrid play cooled off on the back-nine - he carded one birdie and two bogeys, including a sloppy one on the final hole - he remains very much in title contention, as part of a bunched leaderboard in the 18-player field.

A Live Blog from Golf.com focusing on Woods' round is here.

Those odds looked somewhat generous after the first round and appeared faintly ridiculous after Woods birdied three of his first four holes on day two and eagled the ninth in spectacular fashion to claim the outright lead.

Woods, playing for the first time in 10 months because of his fourth back surgery, was tied for fifth.

Against long odds, facing some of the best players in the world and coming just seven months after spinal fusion surgery to his lower back, the former world No. 1 and victor of 14 majors and 79 PGA Tour titles put himself in position Friday to actually win for the first time since 2013.

"I think everyone was hoping for the best, but yes, this is better than what we thought would happen", said Joe LaCava, Woods' caddie. "That's going to take time, a lot more practice, a lot more training and more tournaments". The first five holes I hit a lot of good shots and felt like I had a good rhythm and a couple birdies early on.

Putting was a problem for Woods as he was surprised by the quickness of the surface. "I played nine straight days at home before coming here and that's one of the reasons I did just that". I got a chance to go out there and play competitive golf again. "I was playing with Justin and he's never played with Tiger".

Spieth had seven birdies and two bogeys during Friday's round. "They were dry, they were rolling out and I air-mailed a few of them well past the hole but I really did struggle with my speed".
