They also said: The Gunners are resigned to losing Alexis in January and have informed City that they want around £35 million for the Chilean.

Sanchez has made clear his intention to join Pep Guardiola's side and discussions over a proposed January move are now underway.

The news has encouraged Manchester City's hierarchy that a deal in the region of £30m could be struck for Sanchez this month with the forward still Guardiola's No. 1 target, though reports suggest that the two clubs are still some way from agreeing a fee.

City are also considering buying a centre-back in the transfer window, with West Bromwich Albion's Jonny Evans remaining a leading option, although ironically they could face competition from Arsenal for the Northern Ireland worldwide.

The transfer debacle has been a constant black cloud around Arsenal, as the Independent claim that some Gunners' players have been annoyed with Sanchez's attitude.

The signing has strengthened talk of Jonny Evans, Samuel Umtiti or Inigo Martinez singing as City go in search of another defender.

City were prepared to wait until the summer but were left with just Sergio Aguero as a recognised striker when Gabriel Jesus suffered a knee ligament injury that will rule him out for around six weeks.

The Catalan reportedly hopes to see City secure the signing of Alexis Sanchez, as well as add another centre-back following Vincent Kompany's latest injury.

City face Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday and would need to register the former Barcelona man on Friday for him to participate against Jurgen Klopp's men.

As noted by Olley, clubs outside of England are able to negotiate terms with Sanchez directly with a view to a pre-contract being signed and a free transfer in the summer.
