  • Bannon to testify in Congress

It was not likely to be Bannon's last such testimony: the New York Times reported Tuesday that Bannon has been subpoenaed by Robert Mueller, the Justice Department special counsel investigating the same issue.

Bannon was a central figure in the latter part of the campaign and in the beginning months of the Trump presidency.

Bannon is the latest high-profile figure to testify before the House committee as part of its ongoing investigation into allegations that Russian Federation interfered in the USA election.

Other than Mr Bannon, no member of Mr Trump's inner circle has been called to testify before the grand jury, which was impanelled in August. Neither Bannon nor his lawyer immediately responded to a request for comment on Monday.

Sources told the Fox News reporter that Bannon was told by the White House not to answer lawmakers' questions about the administration or the Trump transition, although he did not claim executive privilege.

The meeting came after Donald Trump Jr. was told in an email that the Russian government had compromising information about Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, to which he replied: "I love it".

The former aide to United States President Donald Trump is to give evidence in the investigation into alleged Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election, the report said.

Mueller issued the subpoena after Bannon was quoted in a new book criticizing Trump, saying that Donald Trump Jr.'s 2016 meeting with Russians was "treasonous" and predicting that the special counsel investigation would ultimately center on money laundering.

The meeting Tuesday also comes after the release of Michael Wolff's controversial book Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House. Instead, he's merely shifted the blame away from Trump Jr. and onto Manafort.

On Jan. 9, Bannon stepped down as chairman of Breitbart News Network after a public break with Trump. Hicks is bound to be asked about both topics when she meets with the House committee. Two other former Trump associates, George Papadopoulos and former National Security Adviser Gen. Michael Flynn have already been indicted on charges of lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Mr Mueller's team has already interviewed Mr Trump's son-in-law and adviser, Jared Kushner, his former chief of staff, Reince Preibus, and his former press secretary, Sean Spicer.
