Giants Deal For Pirates Slugger Andrew McCutchen

16 January, 2018, 01:14 | Author: Greg Wolfe
  • Report: Pirates trade McCutchen to Giants

The Giants have already traded for veteran Evan Longoria to take over at third base, so they are stacking up with veterans.

The move is bound to be unpopular with a segment of Pittsburgh's fanbase.

So, on December 20 they traded for Longoria, the best player in the history of the Tampa Bay Rays, who also is 32 years old.

The Giants won't necessarily be satisfied with Longoria and McCutchen.

While details of the trade, first reported by The Athletic, remained vague, sources confirmed Monday that the two teams had reached an agreement.

This time, it was center fielder Andrew McCutchen, who led the Pittsburgh Pirates out of two decades of misery and into three consecutive playoff appearances.

Bonds' departure is a clear demarcation point in the Pirates' history.

The 31-year-old McCutchen comes to San Francisco after nine years with the Pirates, including a MVP season in 2013. He was voted National League MVP in 2013. He eventually had a big second half and eventually brought his season stats to a.279/.363/.486 slash with 28 home runs in 156 games.

After a down year in 2016, McCutchen bounced back well in 2017. McCutchen's contributions in 2018 likely weren't going to make much of a difference for Pittsburgh in terms of returning to the postseason. McCutchen will make $14.5 million in 2018, allowing the Giants to reset their tax penalties. When the Pirates pulled the trigger on Cole, there'd be no more feigning designs on 2018 competency, a fact that surely wasn't lost on the Giants.

The inevitable promotion of Austin Meadows will help soften the blow of losing McCutchen for fans in Pittsburgh. Reynolds had a great season with San Francisco's High-A ball club.

In that respect, McCutchen is a big upgrade.
