A Special CBI Court on Saturday handed out three and half year jail term to Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad Yadav, who was found guilty in the fodder scam case.

He was fined Rs 5 lakh for each case, failing which he would serve another six months in jail, a CBI counsel said.

The former Chief Minister, who is in Ranchi's Birsa Munda Jail, received his sentence through video-conference, reports added.

Soon after the announcement of quantum of punishment, RJD leaders said that they would appeal against the sentence in a higher court.

Lalu Prasad Yadav's advocate on Friday had filed a plea before Ranchi Special CBI Court demanding minimum punishment to the RJD Chief on health grounds. Lalu Prasad Yadav and 15 others were convicted in a fodder scam case 21 years after it had surfaced while acquitting six others including another former chief minister Jagannath Mishra. The Special CBI Court was supposed to sentence the convicts on January 3.

Transporters/suppliers Tripurari Mohan Prasad got seven years imprisonment and Rs 10 lakh fine while Sushil Kumar Sinha was given three-and-a half years in jail and a fine of Rs five lakh.

Eleven of them died and three turned approvers, while two other accused confessed and were convicted in 2006-07, a CBI official said.

RJD leader and son of Lalu Prasad Yadav, Tejashwi Yadav today claimed that BJP would have given his father title of "Raja Harischandra" had he aligned himself with the party. The conviction in this case pertains to embezzling of more than Rs89 lakh from the Deoghar Treasury between 1991 and 1994.
