  • Updated NASA map shows calculated trajectory of Michigan meteor, where to look for meteorite

Residents of southeast MI got either a thrill or a scare Tuesday when a rare meteor appeared to explode in the night sky.

A fireball from a descending meteor lit up the sky north of Detroit on Tuesday night, creating a brief spectacle that people across the northern United States and parts of Canada reported seeing.

The society said reports suggest that a space rock went deep into the Earth's atmosphere before breaking apart, the AP reported.

The United States Geological Survey confirmed that a meteor had fallen and reported that the blast had caused a magnitude 2.0 natural disaster centered about 5 miles from New Haven, Michigan according to Karma Allen of ABC News.

The best explanation for the massive fireball is that, when a meteorite enters our atmosphere it compresses the atmospheric gasses in front of it.

"Most people don't see meteors this bright..." It produced a big boom as it broke up in the atmosphere and, in all likelihood, left small meteorites on the ground in the region. Whitford calls it a special event for MI.

Reports started pouring in around 8:15 p.m. Tuesday.

Initially though, as curious residents took to social media by droves to share videos of the dazzling display, the National Weather Service wasn't so sure what these star-gazers had seen.

"It was definitely a meteor", Bill Cooke, lead for NASA's Meteoroid Environment Office at the Marshall Space Flight Center in Alabama, told The Washington Post on Wednesday. "Really smooth, unique", Hankey said.

A bolide is a special type of fireball which explodes in a bright terminal flash at its end, often with visible fragmentation.

According to the buying guide, they usually sell for $300 per gram or more, which means a one pound piece of meteorite could be worth $1 million. "They didn't make it into a planet like the Earth, so they can tell you something about the history of what happened before the Earth existed". This will likely spur meteorite hunters to seek out bits of the material where it may have landed near Detroit.
