  • 4.4 magnitude earthquake in Berkeley rattles Bay Area residents

A 4.4 magnitude quake hit Berkeley early Thursday morning, jolting residents awake throughout the San Francisco Bay Area.

But there's also a chance that this was a foreshock, a precursor to a larger quake.

The Hayward Fault is capable of producing a 7-magnitude fault, which would have caused significantly more damage.

"It was relatively deep for an natural disaster on the Hayward Fault", Knudsen said.

On average, the fault produces a large natural disaster every 160 years, with a margin of error of about 80 years. In fact, the 150th anniversary is coming up, we think that quake was a magnitude 6.8 or so,"Knudson said". But a video posted to Twitter showed products that had fallen from the shelves of a San Leandro Safeway store. Early delays in train service were cleared up by 5:30 a.m., the agency said.

Long-time San Franciscan Nancy Foley said in an email to CBS San Francisco that the quake felt much larger than the initial 4.5 estimate.

It was considered the "Great Earthquake" until 1906, when San Francisco was hit by its last major quake, which killed 700 people. "I'm also a native and lived through a large one in the late 50's as a kid, and the Loma Prieta in '89, while I was in an elevator..."

About an hour after the quake, San Francisco┬┤s Department of Emergency Management sent a text to residents saying there was no tsunami warning.

Pamela Jones posted: "Felt stronger than 4.5, in Concord".
