Most people who try a cigarette just once go on to form a daily habit, a new study has claimed.

Researchers from the Queen Mary University of London, studied survey data from 215,000 people across four countries, the UK, USA, Australia and New Zealand to come to their conclusion. The team found that 60.3 per cent of respondents had tried a cigarette, and among those, 69 per cent said that they had progressed to daily smoking.

The authors of the study said the research pointed to the "remarkable hold" cigarettes can have on their users from the first try.

Prof Hajek added that it doesn't seem to be the case that e-cigarettes are as addictive as conventional cigarettes. The research selected asked respondents whether they'd ever tried a cigarette and ever smoked daily.

The results published in the Oxford University Press peer-reviewed journal Nicotine & Tobacco Research suggested that more than a half of adults, English-speakers living in developed countries between 2000 and 2016 tried at least one cigarette, but less than a half of those decided not to keep doing it.

The dramatic shift from one-time smoking to a daily habit added to the evidence of the dangers of cigarette addiction, and the researchers believe their information could help in creating guidelines to prevent teens from even trying out cigarettes for fun.

There is typically an air of optimism that comes with the start of the new year that inspires people to make changes in their lives.

In the year 2010, smoker's percentage in the United Kingdom was 19.

Max Birge et al, What proportion of people who try one cigarette become daily smokers?

"Tobacco use starts in childhood for two-thirds of smokers in the United Kingdom, and this study suggests that even trying a cigarette becomes regular use in most cases", she added.

In 2016, 15.5% of the adults from the United Kingdom smoked, down from 19.9% in 2010, according to the office for National Statistics.

Deborah Arnott, chief executive of the charity Action on Smoking and Health, said that this means there should be tighter government regulations on tobacco sales.

"The government is refusing to introduce licensing for tobacco retailers, even though there is strong support for this both from the public and retailers", she said.
