Stars to walk Golden Globes red carpet with activists

While award show red carpets used to be filled with answers to the question, "Who are you wearing?" this year, actresses largely used their time at the microphone to advance their causes.

"We are really coming together to say, "time's up" on the imbalance of power everywhere. It's about solidarity, and what can be born of women speaking to each other, empowering ourselves", said Emma Watson, who attended with friend Marai Larasi, executive director of Imkaan, which the actress described as "an unbelievable black feminist organization that fights violence against women and girls".

Streep - who has been heavily criticized for her response to the allegations against her longtime collaborator Harvey Weinstein - will bring along National Domestic Workers Alliance director and 2014 MacArthur fellow Aj-jen Poo, according to Variety.

Many Golden Globes stars walked today's red carpet with activists as their dates.

- Tarana Burke, senior director of the nonprofit Girls for Gender Equity and founder of the #MeToo movement, will attend with Ms. Williams, a nominee for her performance in "All the Money in the World". "I hope people see the momentum and the energy and that fact that we're uniting across all industries and all communities standing together and saying we all deserve to work in places where we're safe", she said.
