Trump asks Schumer to White House to strike deal averting shutdown

  • California 'Dreamers' arrested outside House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy's office

Bill Hoagland, a senior vice president at the Bipartisan Policy Center and a former Republican Senate budget staff director, said government shutdowns and continuing resolutions have gone on for decades in Washington, but Friday's shutdown threat was different because it was the first time a shutdown has loomed while a single party has held both Congress and the presidency.

"We've passed our CR [Continuing Resolution]", McCarthy said after a House leadership meeting.

The Republican-controlled Senate's bid to avert a United States government shutdown is teetering on the brink of collapse as it races against a midnight deadline.

Democrats in the Senate served notice they would filibuster a four-week extension, the government-wide funding bill that cleared the House Thursday evening. "Whether there is a government shutdown or not is entirely up to them". The fact we've come this close to a government shutdown shows how troubled the party is, according to opinion writers Molly Roberts, Christine Emba, Alexandra Petri and Stephen Stromberg.

They complained that funding the government in small increments leaves federal agencies and the Pentagon in the dark about how much money they will have this year.

White House officials are bracing for a shutdown - while looking to lessen its impacts by keeping things like national parks and the post office open, a sign they're wary of how the politics will play for the GOP.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell needs the support of at least 10 members of the Democratic caucus to reach the 60-vote threshold to approve the measure. Rep. Steny Hoyer of Maryland, the No. 2 House Democrat, said lawmakers have not completed their work and should not leave Washington. The President had been planning to spend the weekend at Mar-a-Lago for the one-year anniversary of his inauguration, hosting a Saturday night fundraising soiree with $100,000 tickets. A Quinnipiac survey released Thursday found that 34 percent of Americans would blame Democrats for a shutdown, 32 would blame congressional Republicans and 21 percent would blame Trump. The current funding measure expires on Friday.

It remains uncertain, however, if the bill with pass the Senate. "We need more Republican victories in 2018!" Republicans, including Senate Majority Leader McConnell (R., Ky.), have berated Democrats for prioritizing the immediate passage of a Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) immigration amnesty program solution over the passage of a budget. "Democrats are about to let the government shut down because they aren't getting immigration reform".

Make no mistake about it: Senate Democrats are the only ones standing in the way of a fully funded government and a reauthorized health insurance program for children.

Republicans controlling the narrowly-divided chamber took up the fight, arguing that Democrats were holding the entire government hostage over demands to protect "Dreamer" immigrants brought to the country illegally as children.
