Trump cited lack of cooperation from states as the reason for his decision to dissolve the Presidential Advisory Commission on Election Integrity, which faces a series of lawsuits over privacy. Trump's statement gave no indication what could happen to the sensitive voter files in the commission's possession, which the GAO said number in the tens of millions.

"It's telling that even in his announcement to its long overdue demise, President Trump continues the false narrative that there is 'substantial evidence of voter fraud", Vanita Gupta, president and CEO of the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights, said January 3.

Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach has charged two more people with voting illegally less than a day after President Donald Trump dismantled his voter fraud commission.

Mississippi Rep. Bennie Thompson, the top Democrat on the House Homeland Security Committee, said voter ID laws, including in his home state, are meant to deter voters.

President Trump isn't one to take a setback silently.

"Lags in updating databases once people attain citizenship plus poor matching procedures can dramatically inflate allegations of noncitizen voting, perhaps enough to please Trump", tweeted University of Florida political scientist Michael McDonald. The President's action was the result of the transparency forced on the Commission by litigation brought by the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law and other organizations, which revealed that the Commission was not undertaking an objective inquiry, but rather attempting to reach a pre-determined and wrong-headed conclusion that widespread voter fraud existed, so as to justify the passage of voter suppressive laws.

The president also tackled developments over North Korea in his Thursday morning tweets - coming after he caused a stir by boasting about the size of his "nuclear button" compared with Kim Jong Un's.

To date, no federal laws have been put in place to limit voting rights and the courts have soundly rejected numerous state restrictions.

"Many mostly Democrat States refused to hand over data from the 2016 Election to the Commission On Voter Fraud".

President Donald Trump abruptly shut down his commission on election integrity on Wednesday evening.

The president continued with an argument in favor of voter identification laws.

Rosenberg said that the commission might have gotten away with imposing restrictions on voting rights if not for the watchdog demands of civil rights activists over the commission's activities.

Among her concerns is that DHS may try to get voter information from states.

A precinct worker checks a voter ID at the Bermuda precinct for the USA presidential election in Dillon, South Carolina, November 8, 2016.

The administration formed the commission, headed by Vice President Mike Pence, in May 2017 and instructed it to investigate "improper voting, fraudulent voter registrations, and fraudulent voting".
