Like many other smartphones, the fingerprint scanner is always waiting to detect a fingerprint when screen is off.

For several years now, cell phone users have had to live with the fear of a potential thief acquiring possession of their device.
Looking a little further into the future, we could see multiple optical image sensors built into displays - or even entire displays featuring the technology, which would mean you could place your finger anywhere on the screen and have your fingerprint read.
From their explanation, "When your fingertip hits the target, the sensor array turns on the display to light your finger, and only your finger".
The in-display fingerprint sensor will solve the industry's challenge of providing high screen-to-body ratio with the positioning of the fingerprint scanner.
This technology will only work for phones that use OLED displays because the sensor looks through the spaces between subpixels from under the panel.
This is according to market research firm TrendForce, which believes in-display fingerprint sensors will make a breakthrough this year, with vendors Samsung, LG, OPPO, Vivo, Xiaomi and Huawei likely to embed this technology, bringing the global fingerprint sensor penetration rate in smartphones to 60%.
The Vivo smartphone uses an optical fingerprint sensor that's bolted to the rear of the OLED display panel of the phone. But as the competition became intense, Synaptics started to actively develop in-display fingerprint sensing technology, says TrendForce. The sensor, that was reviewed and used at CES was on Vivo, a Chinese phone maker's brand, and was tested out by CNet. A fingerprint sensor is more practical. Place your finger there, wait for a split second and the phone will unlock with a cool animation taking place. But sadly none of the big smartphone manufacturers were able to implement this feature in their flagship phones.
