  • Sen. Cory Booker D-N.J. questions Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen during a hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Capitol Hill Tuesday Jan. 16 2018

This article contains language that some readers may find offensive; discretion is advised.

"The Department of Justice is reviewing what avenues may be available", Nielsen told the Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday.

"The conversation was very impassioned, I don't dispute that the President was using tough language, others in the room were also using tough language".

"This was a very unfortunate mistake", she said. "If you are a DACA that's compliant with your registration - meaning you haven't committed a crime and you in fact are registered - you are not a priority of enforcement for ICE should the program end".

A senior White House official said Trump does not believe he has an ally on this issue in Graham, a Republican who has long tried to partner with Democrats on immigration legislation.

Sanders tells reporters that Trump "hasn't said he didn't use strong language" in the meeting with bipartisan in the heated immigration debate last week. The talks also overshadow larger spending negotiations ahead of a possible federal government shutdown this week.

Sen. Cory Booker slammed the homeland security secretary in a speech Tuesday morning for claiming ignorance to the President's slander of African countries. Nielsen replied that Trump was discussing immigration "from a merit-based perspective" and that he wanted immigrants "with skills who can assimilate and contribute to the United States, moving away from country quotas and to an individual merit system".

"I believe that is part of the discussion and to make sure that we don't continue temporary populations that continue to exist we should talk about that", Nielsen said.

"I'm just going to press back on you once on the subject", the Fox News host said.

The White House has not substantively disputed accounts of the episode, in which Trump is said to have used the term "shithole" to describe African countries of origin for potential immigrants to the U.S. The revelations, semi-denials and continuing comments have cast a pall over the White House's legislative agenda, brought the country closer to the brink of a government shutdown and sparked worldwide outrage. Your silence and your amnesia is complicit in it, Booker said to Nielsen.

Booker said he was in Puerto Rico meeting with hurricane victims when Sen.

"I hurt", Booker said, adding that he then cried "tears of rage" at Trump while continuing his work on the storm-battered American protectorate.

"What I was struck with is, I'm sure you were as well, was just the general profanity that was used in the room by nearly everyone", DHS Secretary, Kirstjen Nielsen, said at Tuesday's Senate Judiciary Committee hearing regarding Thursday's Oval Office meeting wherein Trump reportedly referred to multiple nations as "shithole" countries.

"I do remember him saying that he was concerned that given the appropriations cycle that any deal that we made now would be limited to this year's appropriation".

Mr Trump denied making the comment. Some have accused the president of racism.

"I know first-hand how today's false alarm affected all of us here in Hawaii, and I am sorry for the pain and confusion it caused", Ige said in a statement. "I'm focused on that full time". Republicans will need at least some Democratic votes to pass a bill ahead of a Friday deadline. Will the president ensure the rights of Dreamers and will he still demand a border wall, with Mexico footing the bill?

The president has suggested a government shutdown would hurt the military and wants Democrats to get the blame if that occurs.
