Neil Saunders, Managing Director of retail consultancy GlobalData, wrote in a note to investors, "There are many demographics, especially younger and professional segments, for whom Walmart is not the destination of choice online.This isn't because it doesn't sell what they want".

One Wall Street analyst said that figures were not enough for investors, as the quarter did not meet expectations. "But there's a lot of questions today".

But investors sent shares down $10.67 a share to $94.11. In taking a page from the so-called Amazon playbook, Walmart hopes to beat the e-commerce behemoth at its own game. Online sales increased 23 percent, but the rate was at a slower pace than the previous three quarters of the fiscal year. Walmart's USA comparable store sales increased 2.6 percent year over year, beating analysts' estimates of 2.2 percent. Comparable same-store sales grew 2.6%, while comp traffic grew 1.6%, both year over year. The company also announced thinner profit margins as it needed to cut prices more than expected to compete with Amazon. For the next 5 years, Wal-Mart Stores expecting Growth of 6.7% per annum, whereas in the past 5 years the growth was -4.53% per annum.
