Distracted Apple Employees Accidentally Walking Into Glass Panels at Apple Park

  • Apple got a painful reminder that design and safety aren't friends

However, these had to be removed because "they detracted from the building's design".

Although the campus opened last September for the 10th anniversary iPhone introduction, it was done under a temporary occupancy permit, and Apple employees just started moving in last month. According to a report from MarketWatch, Apple had to call emergency services to treat some minor cuts to the heads of employees who accidentally walked into the clear glass walls.

And yet, after all that effort, even while Apple Park is undoubtedly an impressive neo-futurist structure, it does have this comical flaw. The building's design was crafted by famed architect Norman Foster, taking major cues from Apple co-founder Steve Job's vision for the new headquarters. As well as the pieces that make up the exterior ring, each open plan pod of Apple Park makes use of glass extensively, including sliding glass doors. Wired magazine, first to pay a visit at its opening previous year, described the structure as a "statement of openness, of free movement", in contrast to Apple's typically insular culture.

Steve Jobs asked British architect Norman Foster and his firm to design Apple's new headquarters in 2006. Jony Ive, Apple's design chief, stepped away from his regular role for roughly two years in order to shepherd Apple Park to completion.

England face tri-series elimination after 12-run defeat by New Zealand
New Zealand found the breakthrough, though, and Colin de Grandhomme caught dangerman Hales for 47 from Ish Sodhi's short delivery. England had lost the two games against Australia and to qualify for the finals, needed to win the rest of the matches.

Place thousands of people distracted by iPhones in a building that is mostly transparent, and perhaps the results are inevitable.

Still, many see the new Apple headquarters as an architectural wonder.

As someone who regularly runs into stuff, I can personally confirm that walls, not people are to blame in this situation, and likely the whole things is more a source of brief personal embarrassment for those involved. Walking into clear glass at the Apple Store continues to be a hazard, warns our own Michael Steeber. As the story points out, none of the collisions have warranted a post to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

We reached out to Apple PR for comment. The suit was settled without any cost to Apple, according to a legal filing in early 2013.
