Last year, the factory turned out 58,481 Santa Fe Sports, as demand was higher for sport utility models.

Previous Santa Fe designs have been fairly ordinary and uninspiring and certainly didn't stand out in the burgeoning SUV market.

The grille matches the new headlight design, tying in with an emerging trend in Hyundai Motor's SUV lineup. The 2.0L is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission, while the 1.6L gets a seven-speed dual-clutch. The ROA alerts the driver if a passenger is in the rear seat, a feature created to prevent parents from accidentally leaving children in a vehicle that might become dangerously hot inside, the company said.

On the domestic front, Hyundai Motor will receive preorders from February 7, with the new Santa Fe to hit showrooms here on February 21.

One of these features is the Rear Occupant Alert which monitors the rear seats to detect passengers and alerts the driver when leaving the vehicle. But with utility vehicles now accounting for half of US new auto sales, and a growing share of the global market, the South Korean company will be expanding its mix over the next several years, starting with the new Kona electric model.

Korea's largest automaker held a media preview event on Tuesday and gave a sneak peek of the new vehicle's key features. Hyundai has been seen developing the new Santa Fe at the famed Nürburgring in Germany, a sign this SUV is going at least be a little bit fun to drive.
