  • UN rights experts alarmed by detention of Palestinian girl

Israel's full-throttle prosecution of Tamimi, one of an estimated 300 Palestinian minors in Israeli jails, and a senior Israeli official's recent revelation that he once had parliament investigate whether the blond, blue-eyed Tamimis are a "real" Palestinian family have helped stoke ongoing interest in the case.

Prosecutors requested more time to prepare a response and a new date was set for March 11, according to Lasky.

A video, which has since gone viral, shows the unarmed teenage girl slapping, kicking, and shoving two armed Israeli soldiers who were wearing protective gear.

Outside court, Tamimi's lawyer Gaby Lasky said her family wanted the case to be heard in public, but the judge had ordered the numerous journalists present to be removed from the courtroom for the proceedings because she was a minor.

Her case has drawn wide public attention to Israeli military court procedures, which are often described by rights groups as discriminatory.

Rights groups such as Amnesty International have pointed out that under the UN's Convention on the Rights of the Child, of which Israel is a state party, the "arrest, detention or imprisonment of a child must be used only as a measure of last resort and for the shortest appropriate period of time".

Ahed Tamimi was detained in a night raid in the occupied West Bank village of Nabi Saleh nearly two months ago, after video circulated showing her and a cousin slapping and shoving two heavily armed Israeli soldiers following an incident in which a soldier had shot in the head and seriously injured their 15-year-old cousin Muhammad Tamimi.

Bassem Tamimi sits in Ahed Tamimi's bedroom holding a poster of his daughter, in their home in the occupied West Bank village of Nabi Saleh, 28 January.

"We believe that this is an indictment exclusively created in order to deter Ahed and other Palestinian youths" from resisting occupation, Lasky said afterward.

The attack in question took place when the suspect was 16 years old and she brought in her 17 birthday while in custody.

Referring to calls for her execution, Fitzpatrick said her extended detention was appalling.

In the closed session, the court read a 12-count indictment against Tamimi, including charges of assault and incitement that could keep her in prison for several years. Ahed has been a regular in Internet videos for years.

Trump has promised to propose a peace plan, but Palestinian officials have said they fear any USA offer would fall far short of their demands, including a capital in Israeli-annexed east Jerusalem.

The 17-year-old girl was arrested on December 19 and must now respond to the judicial process, while remaining in jail, for which United Nations experts demand respect to the rules of worldwide law and demand her freedom. Ahed was arrested in an overnight raid on her West Bank home on December 19, with the Israeli military releasing video of her being led out of her house in handcuffs. Tamimi is to go on trial Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2018, before an Israeli military court, for slapping and punching two Israeli soldiers in December.

Ahed's lawyer accuses the military of breaking the United Nations convention on the rights of a child during her nighttime arrest and interrogation, during which she says Ahed was threatened. For Palestinians, the young teen is a symbol of resistance to Israeli occupation, but many Israelis regard her as a violent troublemaker seeking publicity.

The video stirred complaints in Israel that the soldiers had been humiliated.

United Nations human rights experts said Tamimi's continued detention violates global legal standards.
