  • King Mohammed VI Congratulates New South African President Cyril Ramaphosa

King Mohammed VI on Friday addressed a congratulatory message to South-Africa's President-elect Cyril Ramaphosa, according to Maghreb Arab Press (MAP).

"This is the year in which we will turn the tide on corruption in our public institutions", Ramaphosa said.

In an apparent signal of the change the Ramaphosa presidency may bring, police on Wednesday raided the Johannesburg property of the Guptas, - wealthy allies of Zuma's who are accused of using their ties with him for financial gain. He quickly spoke out against the corruption that had weakened the ANC, which has been in power since the end of white minority rule in 1994, and sped up the momentum that led to Zuma's resignation.

VUMANI MDLALOSE (32) Imbali Unit BB: "This was Zuma's past year anyway; I didn't see the need for him to resign".

President Muhammadu Buhari has congratulated Cyril Ramaphosa on his election as the President of the Republic of South Africa.

Mandela reportedly favored Ramaphosa to take over for him as ANC leader, but in 1997 the party instead chose Thabo Mbeki, who later succeeded Mandela as president.

He said he would also be establishing a Presidential Economic Advisory Council to help find solutions to revive the economy.

"The drive towards the digital industrial revolution will be underpinned by the availability of efficient networks", Ramaphosa said. I don't watch it because I don't care, I do care about about what is happening in South Africa, because I am a citizen.

The story goes that he was so upset at not having been chosen by Nelson Mandela as his successor that he left politics and went into business.

"This is not a flash in the pan", Ramaphosa said. He was overwhelmingly elected deputy president of the ANC, serving directly under Zuma.

There is a renewed sense of hope as Mr Ramaphosa is taking over the reins of Africa's most industrialised economy.

It was only a year ago - when it was clear Ramaphosa would not secure Zuma's support to succeed him in the party and in the government - that Ramaphosa began publicly distancing himself from Zuma.

To many, Ramaphosa appeared to be biding his time, simply waiting for Zuma to complete his second and last term in office.

After Ramaphosa's election as party leader in mid-December, his camp began pressing to remove Zuma as the country's president as soon as possible.
