The company's previous capacity king was March 2016's 15.36 TB PM1633a.

South Korean tech giant Samsung has announced that it has begun mass producing, what the company is claiming to be, the industry's largest capacity Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) solid state drive (SSD) - the PM1643.

Having that much storage space on a single 2.5-inch SSD seems bananas by today's standards, but who knows in a year or three.

The company says it plans to incorporate the 512GB chips into SSD drives with smaller capacities. As long as we're talking about big numbers, the drive's 40 GB of DRAM cache is also worthy of attention.

Steam wishlist sort and filter improvements rolled out
However, we found that there are cases where it isn't always clear which version of the game should be added to the cart. In addition to the visual upgrade, the Wishlist now has a selection of filters that can be applied to its games.

The 512 flash chips are packed into 32 16-die packages. The PM1643 wields 40GB of DRAM that is grouped into 4GB packages using TSV (Through-Silicon Vias), which marks the first time TSV DRAM has made its way into an SSD.

If you need to pack more storage into your enterprise systems, then boy has Samsung got the SSD for you. The new drive has a 12GBps SAS interface with random read and write speeds of up to 400,000 IOPS (input/output operations per second) and 50,000 IOPS respectively. When compared to the previous generation SAS SSDs, the new drive delivered almost twice the performance. Sequential read performance clocks in at up to 2,100 MB/s, while write speeds are given as 1,700 MB/s. This gives the drive two times the capacity and speed of its predecessor, but allows it to retain its unassuming 2.5-inch frame. "Samsung will continue to move aggressively in meeting the shifting demand toward SSDs over 10TB and at the same time, accelerating adoption of our trail-blazing storage solutions in a new age of enterprise systems". Samsung used its own SSD 850 EVO for the comparison.

On the software/firmware side, the PM1643 supports metadata protection, data retention and recovery from sudden power interruptions, and an error correction code (ECC) algorithm that ensures high reliability and a minimum of required maintenance.

The 30TB PM1643 drives are already in production with 15.36TB, 7.68TB, 3.84TB, 1.92TB, 960GB and 800GB versions also planned. Speaking of integrity, Samsung has assured users that it has a robust endurance level of one full drive write per day which means that it is able to write the full 30.72TB of data on to the drive every day for as long as its 5-year warranty period.
