But it isn't as if the Walking Dead would pretend to kill someone simply to bring them back a few episodes later. We'll get to see how his goodbye will play out Sunday, Feb. 25, when The Walking Dead continues on AMC. It was a character-driven rather than plot-driven 82 minutes, which isn't such a bad thing, I guess. Judith says good morning to Negan who is working on some tomato plants. It's big disagreement at a crucial time in the formation of this fledgling society, and it's manifested all over the first half of the season. I've taken to calling these two possible futures-I assume that's what they are-the "Bleary Eyes Future" and the "Old Man Rick" future.
The flawless future ends with Rick opening his eyes as he lies against a tree after burying his son.
Rick told Carl he was going to make it real, but the future viewers saw in the season 8 premiere and the mid-season premiere is about as real as unicorns, leprechauns and the Loch Ness Monster. Will Rick's mercy prevail over his wrath, and allow Negan a role in his vision of the future? If you wanted to turn it into a totally different show, you get rid of those people.
Unsurprisingly, Andrew Lincoln wasn't the only member of the Walking Dead team who had a hard time dealing with Carl's death.
Although the AMC hit isn't what it was, it remains a major cultural presence, and the death of an original character - as well as a significant departure from the source comics - is still something of an occasion.
Morgan and Carol try to free Ezekiel and Morgan ... well, let's just say I haven't seen someone Kali-ma someone's insides outside their body like that since Temple of Doom. The answers just seem to matter a little bit more now. "They know what a family they are and how determined they are and what people do to keep them safe and how many people will kill to keep their loved ones safe". The last few seasons have made death feel so inconsequential because people are constantly being killed, but they're all faceless mooks who respawn in the enemy headquarters after 30 seconds. I didn't. But you will.
Some stray observations and questions for you, Josh.

Throughout the episode, we see glimpses of old Rick, with the beard and the cane. So there you go. Later that same season we learned that Carl was slowly but surely becoming a ruthless killer after he shot Jody, a young man from Woodbury who surrendered.
"I had multiple hats", Riggs said of the now-iconic prop.
Rick's response: "I will make it real Carl, I promise".
"You think we're going to be out there picking strawberries with Negan?" So often on this show, deaths are unexpected, or immediate, or both, and there's no chance for characters to have the emotional moments with each other that they do in so much of television.
- Is it just me, or was that indie folk tune in the beginning horrifically out of place with the montage of Carl grappling with his morality?
Here are the 5 moments that had us breaking down in tears. or screaming "WTF' at the TV screen". Did they get blown up in the Alexandria fires or do you think that Carl put them in the letter to her? Or will it be something else entirely, a combination of the two?
