Dem senator: I hope DeVos 'gets a handle' on school safety commission

  • US Education Secretary Betsy De Vos said she will chair a federal commission on school safety

The long-time Republican donor and education reform advocate from Grand Rapids, who for decades has pushed for increased school choice and charter schools in MI, told "60 Minutes" correspondent Lesley Stahl that "I don't know" if Michigan's public schools are improving.

Whenever DeVos speaks, it feels as though the sum total of human knowledge is somehow diminished.

DeVos' spokeswoman Liz Hill said that the secretary's focus was on promoting successful innovation, including in traditional public schools. If DeVos was coached to be as vague and non-specific in her answers as possible, she should get rid of the person giving her that advice.

DeVos' "60 Minutes" appearance was widely panned, with CNN contributor Ana Navarro saying she "had not seen a TV interview so cringe-inducing, since Sarah Palin saw Russian Federation from her back yard" and U.S. Rep. Jared Huffman, D-Calif., saying that if President Donald Trump wants to "meet someone who has an actual IQ problem", he should look to DeVos.

The commission would look at a "wide range" of ideas in order to ensure that "no student or family should ever have to live the horror of Parkland or Sandy Hook ever again", FOX News reported that DeVos said in a statement.

DeVos is the wealthiest Cabinet member, the segment pointed out.

See video below for an excerpt dealing specifically with MI schools.

"I have not. I have not". She expected Jed to do his homework once in school, so she did her homework first on the schools near their SC home.

"Maybe I should. Yes", said the secretary.

In one exchange, DeVos, who has slammed America's public schools as severely underperforming, said she hasn't "intentionally" visited such schools in her home state of MI. In response to the question, DeVos told Stahl: "All of these issues or all of this issue comes down to individual kids" and that the issue of institutional racism was being "carefully" studied. After 10 minutes of DeVos, the human brain loses the ability to perform simple arithmetic. "It wasn't just that interview last night, it was also her two interviews this morning where she couldn't even defend the administration's proposals on school safety". If this is the caliber of the top education official in the land, it hardly speaks well for getting an education. Around 90 percent of American children attend public schools. Exit polls showed a huge education gap in the 2016 election. The National Center for Education Statistics, part of DeVos' Education Department, predicts enrollment of full-time students in degree-granting postsecondary institutions, up 38 percent between 2000 and 2014, will climb an additional 15 percent by 2025.

Of course, DeVos knows that Michigan's not doing well. DeVos, who once said traditional public education is a "dead end", is proving by example as the nation's top educator that education generally is a dead end. These court-issued orders allow for law enforcement officers to remove guns from people who pose a demonstrated threat, "to temporarily prevent such individuals from purchasing new firearms, all while still protecting due process rights", said Andrew Bremberg, a presidential assistant who heads the Domestic Policy Council. She could have talked about how her policies might improve Michigan's public and private schools; instead, she merely agreed with Stahl and conveyed a sense of weariness. While she argued that it "should be an option for states and communities to consider", DeVos went on to say that she would hesitate to think of "like my first grade teacher, Mrs. Zoerhoff...having a gun and being trained in that way".
