Republican Senate Majority Leader Bill Dix resigned Monday after the political website "Iowa Starting Line" published images of him and a lobbyist for the Iowa League of Cities, identified as Lindsey McCune, kissing in a bar.

Sen. Bill Dix, the leader of Iowa's GOP-controlled state Senate, abruptly announced his resignation effective immediately after meeting with Republican colleagues around 1 p.m. The senator resigned Monday after a video surfaced showing him kissing a statehouse lobbyist.

"I believe he made the right decision for himself and for his district, but most importantly, I believe he made the decision in the best interest of his family", said Whitver about Dix.

Dix has three children, according to the Des Moines Register, and had served in the state legislature for 18 years.

Legislative leaders in the Republican-controlled Iowa House have not commented on Dix, who had been a top Republican in the Senate for several years.

Senate Democratic Leader Janet Petersen issued a statement raising the possibility that state policy had been affected by Dix's relationship with the lobbyist. The hook-up reportedly occurred on March 1 at the Waveland Tap, a watering hole about five miles from the Des Moines State Capitol.

The 52-second video shows Dix, 55, and the unidentified lobbyist drinking and laughing at the bar before Dix leans in for a kiss. He became majority leader after GOP lawmakers took control of the chamber following the 2016 election.

Schneider says despite the leadership upheaval, senate committees will meet and the senate will debate, when necessary this week.

Gov. Kim Reynolds met with Dix this afternoon after telling Des Moines' WHO TV she was "disappointed" after initially hearing the news.

Petersen also criticized Dix for how he handled a sexual misconduct case involving a former Senate GOP staffer. He represented Butler, Grundy, Hardin and Story counties. In Nov., he held a rambling press conference in which he claimed that a report prepared by the Senate staff showed that harassment was no longer a problem in the Republican caucus.
