  • UN Nuclear Watchdog: Iran-Accord Failure Would Be 'Great Loss'

But the key focus has been the 120-day deadline set by Trump in January for U.S. lawmakers and European allies to "fix" the nuclear deal, removing "sunset clauses" that mean it expires in 2026 and reining in Iran's missile programme and regional activities.

He is scheduled to hold meetings with Iran's President Hassan Rouhani and Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, Iran's semi-official ISNA news agency said.

Trump has threatened to withdraw the United States from the accord between Tehran and six world powers, signed in 2015 before he took office, unless Congress and European allies help "fix" it with a follow-up pact.

Le Drian was in Tehran on a delicate mission to reaffirm Europe's support for a nuclear deal that opened Iran's economy while echoing US concern about Tehran's missile programme and role in regional conflicts.

The Iranian-backed Lebanese militant group Hezbollah is fighting alongside Syrian President Bashar Assad's forces.

After his talks, he was due to inaugurate a new exhibition with works from the Louvre Museum in Tehran.

That has slowed down Rouhani's efforts to engage with the West, opposed by influential allies of Iran's top authority Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei who remain uneasy about Iran's efforts to court its old enemies.

China hints at taking retaliatory measures against USA tariffs
In the face of global criticism, Mr Trump doubled down, tweeting last Friday that "trade wars are good, and easy to win". Zhang emphasized that trade disputes should be resolved through dialogue.

In 2017, France was Iran's second biggest trade partner in the European Union.

The statement, made by Behrouz Kamalvandi, spokesperson for Iran's Atomic Energy Organization, indicates the Islamic Republic's uranium enrichment centrifuges haven't been modified or reduced at all - a blatant violation of the JCPOA. The ministry said it wanted Iran to contribute in a "positive" manner to solving crises in the Middle-East.

The two countries are also at odds over Iran's involvement in the Syria conflict.

"There are programs for missiles that can travel several thousand kilometers, which are not compatible with UN Security Council resolutions and which exceed the needs of defending Iran's borders", Le Drian told the Journal du Dimanche newspaper.

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi described Iran's missile program as "fully defensive and deterrent in nature to safeguard the country's territorial integrity, independence and freedom", asserting that Iran's missile program is not in violation of the United Nations resolutions and rules. "We have our own concerns and will talk to the different sensibilities of the Iranian system to get our point across".

Iran denies supplying the rebels with that and describes its ballistic missile programme as only a defensive weapon.

"We want to preserve the nuclear deal because it is working, it's robust and because the Iranians are respecting it", his team told AFP ahead of the visit.
